Have you ever heard of the term, “You reap what you sow?” It certainly is true. Would you expect to reap fresh ripe apples after sowing seeds to an orange tree? Or how about reaping walnuts after sowing an almond tree? It sound ridiculous, doesn’t it!

However, so many parents are sowing seeds that will ruin their child’s future, while at the same time expecting to reap a future of prosperity and happiness. Just as it is in the natural world so it is in the spiritual world. Parents must recognize and embrace the importance of character formation in the early years of a child’s development.

Unfortunately, many parents believe that they can indulge wrong habits and character traits in babyhood and that the child will somehow magically put of those tendencies. Other parents go to the opposite extreme and are very harsh and exacting with their child thinking that fear will produce a “righteous character”. Both sides are extreme examples and we must be balanced.

As parents, we must work with wisdom, calmness, and determination to train and subdue our children, recognizing that there is a spiritual battle for mastery of the will inside each of us. Instead of allowing society to shape the character of a child, which may go against the moral compass, children should be guided. This type of home training will enhance the educational realm in a profound way.

We understand this from a Christian point of view. Your point of view may differ, but we can agree that if children are left to do as they please, without restraints, they will be miserable and unproductive members of society. We, as parents, must seek to remedy that. Remember that, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). If we seek for our children to be wise, we must begin in the home.
